PORT MOODY – New Democrat MLA for Port Moody-Coquitlam Rick Glumac says legislative changes will lay the groundwork for the Burrard Thermal lands to become the site for clean tech projects and contribute to the fight against climate change while also boosting the local economy and creating jobs.

“Unlocking the potential of the Burrard Thermal lands positions Port Moody as a leader in clean energy and it’s time to take advantage of the opportunity. These new amendments would make the site an ideal location for redevelopment and clean tech projects and will help B.C. continue to be a world leader in the fight against climate change.”

Today New Democrats introduced Bill 11 which includes an amendment to the Clean Energy Act to allow BC Hydro to pursue opportunities for alternative uses for the site of the de-commissioned Burrard Thermal facility in Port Moody.

This legislation would change the categorization of Burrard Thermal so that BC Hydro can look at alternative uses for the site, including clean tech projects like hydrogen production, data centres, and carbon capture and storage.

MLA Glumac says this change has the potential to provide benefits for BC Hydro customers, create local jobs and bring investments to B.C., contributing to our pandemic recovery as we achieve our CleanBC goals.
