The clean, green, sustainable economy is the economy of the future. And in BC, we can be climate leaders.
Last month at the Cascadia Innovation Conference, I heard Washington Governor Jay Inslee say he’s inspired by our climate leadership. We’re one of the few jurisdictions with a carbon tax, yet we have the fastest-growing economy in Canada. Climate action and economic growth are not opposing forces.
We already have incredible companies here, like General Fusion, who lead the world in development of clean fusion energy. BC companies like Carbon Engineering have developed low-cost technology to pull carbon out of the atmosphere.
I’m also excited by our proposed Professional Governance Act. It fills a need identified by many British Columbians to better protect the public interest. The act improves and provides consistent oversight and safeguards specifically for the professions involved in decision-making in the natural resource sector. This is a huge step forward for protecting our environment.
We can lead the way. I know tackling climate change is daunting, but there is hope. Working together for our children, our future, BC can lead the way forward. And that is exactly what we will do.

This month, I’ll be spending much of my time in the Legislature in Victoria. I’m also looking forward to attending a Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) meeting in Whitehorse. We now have partners on both sides of the border working together. The possibilities for our tech sector presented by the Cascadia Innovation Corridor are exciting.
